Sarushiya's tempra

Tempra indicates deep-fried fish paste patty in Kagawa.
Differ from butter-fired ordinal ones, Kagawa's tempra has rather similar
appearance and texture to kamaboko, boiled fish paste.
Sarushiya is loved by the locals and worth to visit around 11 o'clock
through Monday to Saturday, you will have a chance not only for observing
a traditional way of making but tasting a piping hot tempra. 110 yen each.

Cycling through mikan patches

orangecycle01.jpg

Setouchi is well known for mikan or mandarin orange cultivation
because of its warm, Mediterranean-like climate.
Cycling or hiking through mikan patches are great ways to enjoy
Setouchi's autumn beauty.

orangecycle09.jpg

Shikoku-no-Michi is a long circuit trail in Shikoku which covers
as long as 1545km combining old pilgrimage routs and hiking trails.
We picked up a section called Mikan-no-Michi, which literally means
orange trail for our day-ride.
The feature of this trail is mandarin orange trees that lines throughout the trail.

orangecycle04.jpg

The path winds along the edge of Nio, a rural village facing to the Seto Inland Sea
over mikan patches. The branches of mikan trees were weighing down
by the growing fruit that were almost ready to harvest.

The most part of Mikan-no-Michi is paved and used as a farm road,
so the trail is relatively easy for any range of cycle travelers.
High-grade MTB descent techniques are not quite necessary here,
but you need to be cautious when you pass through slippery parts
piled with fallen leaves or branches.

orangecycle10.jpg

After some short but heartbreak-hills, the path becomes gentle and easy descent.
The most exciting part of the riding through mikan patches.

orangecycle07.jpg

In harvesting season during October to December, slight but sweet aroma of mikan
surround mountains along the trail. Th
at's the autumn specialty along with Setouchi's picturesque scenery.

Kagawa's Autumn: A Full of Festivals

Chosa Festival, Mure, Takamatsu)

We have many festivals in Kagawa Prefecture in October. Chosa (a giant float)
and Lion Dances so called Shishimai are Shinto rituals to express our gratitude
for the bountiful harvest and pray for prosperity and peace to local deities.

Major guidebooks such as Lonely Planet might not introduce this,
but Kagawa is the hottest shishimai country with over 1000-years history.
As many as over 800 shishimai are dedicated to local shrines
at this time of the year. Each shishimai in Kagawa has its own tradition,
how to dance, playing style of instrumentals, designs of decorative
yutan cloth
which is the body part of a lion and so on.

If possible, I personally recommend to see a local festival,
not famous ones even though you will have a bit of difficulty
to get information such as parking locations.

Sound of drums, chants, guts shown by men carrying a giant chosa float
(super heavy, indeed). Dynamic movement of shishimai and
people who watch over them proudly and fondly.

In October, Kagawa is a full of festivals. why not share Japan's
deep culture w
ith the locals. Enjoy!

・・・And more festivals ahead!
